Policies and General Information

About Therapy: Healing and growth through psychotherapy can sometimes be uncomfortable when you confront painful issues. Rest assured, this is normal and should be anticipated, but it is not permanent. The length of therapy, or the number of appointments it takes to achieve your therapeutic objectives, is determined by you. The amount of work you are willing to do determines the pace and direction of your therapy. Therapy is a collaborative effort between you and me, and while I will share my observations and make recommendations, with regards to the pace, direction, and length of therapy, you have full autonomy over these decisions and your input is welcomed.

Limits to Confidentiality: While every effort is made to protect your confidentiality, there are some circumstances in which it must be overruled:

  • If there is ongoing abuse of a child or partner. This includes physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse.
  • If you become actively suicidal or homicidal- meaning there is a serious threat to your own safety or the safety of another person(s), we are legally required to protect you, or anyone else in danger, and notify the authorities.
  • If you have a legal case and your mental status is a factor in the case. Your clinical notes may be subpoenaed by the court and we are required by law to provide all requested information.
  • Third party providers (i.e., medical providers, insurance providers ) are entitled to know diagnoses, treatment, and/or prognosis under particular, and rare, (e.g., life-threatening) situations in which the release of such information is necessary for the party to perform their legal obligations.

Appointments: Sessions are 45-60 minutes in length, beginning 10-15 minutes after the hour. I will make every effort to see you promptly at the scheduled appointment time, so it is requested that you also be responsible for arriving at appointments on time. If you are late, your session will be limited to the time remaining in the hour you were scheduled. If you are not able to attend your appointment and cancel or reschedule it within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment, you will be charged the full cost for the session (exceptions may be made for emergency circumstances). This is standard policy as Insurance and other third-party providers do not cover missed appointment charges. Please do not bring young children to your appointment, as there are no child-care services available for them while you're in session.

Insurance Billing: I only accept the following insurances: PEHP, Aetna, Cigna, EMI, Medicaid, Regence Blue Cross-Blue Shield and the University of Utah. If your insurance is not listed, above, I am happy to provide you with documentation to allow you to be reimbursed by your insurance provider, if they cover mental health services.

Court Appearances: Due to policy and clinical demands, I do not testify in civil or criminal court proceedings. I will, however, supply the court and/or attorneys with documentation at your request, or the request of the court. A signed release of information is required for such documentation to be supplied.

Phone Calls: Therapists will try to return phone calls as quickly as possible. Please keep in mind, however, that your therapist has minimal time between session so calls may not be returned until the end of the day or the following day. Issues that require longer than 10 minutes on the phone to resolve may require a scheduled office visit.
