Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to resolve various interpersonal problems between couples, whether they are together, separated or divorced. Although the focus of couples therapy is on the couple, there are times when the personal problems of one or both partners need to be addressed, which may require intermittent sessions of individual therapy.

Is Couples Therapy right for you?

It may be time to seek couples therapy if an issue is causing moderate to severe distress or functional impairment in your relationship. Below are some things that couples therapy can help with:

  • Toxic criticism
  • Encountering the same stumbling blocks day after day
  • You are slowly drifting further away from each other
  • Distrust
  • Lack of commitment
  • Unsupported hopes and dreams
  • Poor communication or conflict resolution- frequent bickering- fights are getting out of control
  • Inequity in effort or responsibilities
  • Hurt and resentment-Unresolved issues from past events and situations
  • Lack of physical, sexual and emotional intimacy- lack of unity, connectedness or closeness. Feeling emotionally detached, isolated or alone in the relationship, which has become strictly platonic- no romantic spark
  • Financial problems
  • Power and control issues
  • Lack or loss of friendship within the relationship
  • Differences in hopes, life goals, or aspirations
  • Sexual or emotional infidelity
  • Problems with jealousy
  • Disagreements about parenting, or other important issues
  • Blended family issues
  • Trying to decide whether or not to stay together only for the children’s benefit
  • Verbal abuse
  • Dealing with the aftermath of trauma
