EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a psychotherapy approach primarily used to treat trauma-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as general maladaptive thought-behavior patterns stemming from trauma history, including complex trauma.
The underlying principle of EMDR is that traumatic experiences, including distressing emotions, negative thought patterns and beliefs, can be stored in the brain’s sub-conscious memory networks, leading to maladaptive thought and behavioral reactions to certain “triggering” stimuli. EMDR aims to help the brain reprocess such memories, resulting in the re-wiring of maladaptive sub-conscious memory networks and more positive thought patterns and adaptive behavioral responses to historically triggering stimuli.
