Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to reduce distress and conflict within the family system by improving the interactions between family members. While some appointments may require the presence of all family members affected by the problem, others may not. In many cases, the presence of all family members may not be possible, necessary or even appropriate, in which case the therapist may request to meet with family members individually.

Is Family Therapy right for you?

It may be time to seek family therapy if an issue is causing moderate to severe distress or dysfunction between family members. Below are some things that family therapy can help with:

  • Unclear household responsibilities, rules, boundaries, and expectations
  • Raising oppositional, hyperactive or distractible children or teens
  • Difficulty adjusting to life-changing events or circumstances
  • Lack of unity
  • Divorce
  • Media and Electronics
  • Difficulty balancing work, school, extracurricular activities, religious engagements and family time
  • Poor communication
  • Lack of structure or routine
  • Lack of familial closeness or connectedness- disengagement
  • Conflict resolution between parents and children
  • Grief
  • Blended family struggles; step-parent discipline, giving equitable attention to step-children, unclear roles, and expectations, difficulty adjusting to unfamiliar customs, norms or etiquette- conflicting values, beliefs.
  • Chronic mental and physical health problems
  • Traumatic experiences- loss and bereavement, marital problems, abuse, mental health, substance abuse
  • Foster care or adoption struggles; adjusting to unforeseen or unexpected challenges
